April Fools Day Food Pranks


Ha! I had such a hoot doing this last year for my little girl. :) I found this great website for fun food pranks--Family Fun. There were so many fun ideas, but I decided to turn juice into gelatin and pre-slice a banana. She thought it was really fun, and, like I said, I had quite a fun time doing it also.

For the juice--just mix juice with Knox gelatin according to the package directions for "Knox Blocks" and pour it into a cup and let it set up. She really did pick it up and try to drink it. Hee hee...

Then for the banana, what you do is take a needle and thread and pierce into the banana. Then thread the thread around the banana (there's an image on the website) and pull it back through the same hole. The result is that it slices the banana but leaves the peel in tact. Then, when you peel the banana, it's already cut up. This also resulted in a very confused look and much snickering from me. :)

Anyway, it was a lot of fun. A little bit of work, but worth the smiles from her and chuckles from me.

Yellow Fruit Salad

Hello Sunshine!

I don't know about you, but in our neck of the woods, spring has been rolling in beautifully, and I'm loving it!

It was time for a sunshine salad.



Mmm, all the finest ingredients--fresh mangos and pineapples, tangy Meyer lemons and even some fresh coconut. The kids were quite entertained by the opening-of-the-coconut process.

Admittedly, the kids picked out all the mango and just ate that, but my husband and I very much enjoyed the whole salad.




It just felt like eating sunshine in a bowl. Wouldn't it be fun for a yellow-themed party? or anything summery? or just because it's delicious...


Also, it's pretty simple.
Here is the "recipe." You'll enjoy it for sure. :)


Yellow Fruit Salad
 From Whole Living Magazine

1 pineapple, skin removed, cored, and cut into 1/2-inch pieces
1 mango, peeled, pitted, and cut into 1/2-inch pieces
1 Meyer lemon, halved lengthwise and thinly sliced, seeds removed, plus 1 tablespoon fresh juice
1/2 cup toasted unsweetened coconut flakes

Combine fruit and lemon juice in a bowl. Top with coconut flakes and enjoy!

Banana-nut waffles

I love banana bread.
I love banana pancakes.
Why not banana waffles?

Conclusion: perhaps even better!!



These waffles were so yummy--the perfect mix of sweet and hearty with the whole-wheat flour and nuts right in the batter.

Big hit with the whole family. Easy enough for everyday, but special enough for the weekend. :)


You'll definitely want to try these one morning. Enjoy!

Banana Walnut Waffles

Ingredients
2 c. all-purpose flour
1 c. whole-wheat flour
1 Tbsp. baking powder
1 tsp. baking soda
1 tsp. salt
¼ c. packed brown sugar
2/3 c. canola or vegetable oil
4 large eggs
2 tsp. vanilla extract
2 ½ c. buttermilk
1/2 c. mashed banana
1/4 c. chopped walnuts

Directions
1. Tturn on your waffle iron to preheat.
2. In a large bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt and brown sugar.
3. In a medium bowl, whisk together eggs, oil, vanilla extract buttermilk, bananas, and walnuts. Add the wet ingredients, all at once to the dry ingredients. Stir until just incorporated. 
4. Cook according to your waffle machine instructions. I always cook until the steam stops coming out--or at least significantly lessens.
5. Serve with warm maple syrup, bananas and nuts.

Lemon Spritzers

Does it feel like Spring yet where you are?

Do you want it to?

These cute little cookies at a little lemon cheerfulness to your day that is unmistakenly Spring-ish and delightful.


Of course, I have made these in the dead of winter when I needed a pick me up.

And in the hot summer for a cooling treat.

I'll probably make them this autumn just to round-out my year-round experience with this yummies. :)

These are always a hit for girly parties too--tea times, baby showers, bridal showers, that sort of thing.


I also like to try new shapes when I make them. I usually make them with the "ribbon" attachment, but we mixed things up a bit this time. :)


Ready for some of that tangy sweetness in your mouth? Here's the recipe for you; it's a recipe worth keeping.



Lemon Spritzers

Cookie:
1 c. butter, softened
½ c. powdered sugar
1 ¾ c. flour
¼ c. cornstarch
1 Tbsp. grated lemon zest
½ tsp. vanilla
 

Lemon glaze:
½ c. powdered sugar
2 tsp. grated lemon zest
4 tsp. lemon juice
 

  1. Heat oven to 350.
  2. Beat butter and powdered sugar in a large bowl on medium speed until light and fluffy.
  3. Mix in flour, cornstarch, lemon zest, and vanilla until well blended. Ideally, you’d refrigerate your dough for an hour or so here. Buuutttt, I never do.
  4. Place dough in a cookie press with a ribbon tip. Form ribbons of dough about 3 inches long on an ungreased cookie sheet.
  5. Bake 9-11 minutes until the edges are just the slightest bit golden—or until right before they become golden. Cool completely.
  6. Dip into the lemon glaze or brush the glaze on with a basting brush.

St. Patrick's Centerpiece

I decided that I needed a St. Patrick's day centerpiece.
I also happen to have a real thing for moss (hence the Spring Moss Wreath I made last year) and therefore I had some extra moss laying around.
I also happen to have a couple of kids who LOVE to paint rocks.
So, bingo--this is what we came up with. :)




We gathered rocks from our back yard and painted them with several coats of a nice metallic gold toll paint. It was a lot of fun for the kiddos, but waiting for the layers of paint to dry proved troublesome on many levels, so I finshed up the last few layers for them. :)



Turned out cute I think. And once St. Patrick's day passes, I can pull out our golden nuggets and add easter eggs or fake fluffy chicks or something fun like that. :)

St. Patrick's Day Favorites

Yea! It's a holiday week!

Here are some of our favorite St. Patrick's day finds from our Pinterest board.

Every year we both make a yummy Irish dinner of corned beef and cabbage and Irish soda bread. Annnd wear some green, of course. We're going all out with green finger nail polish this year. ;)

Chocolate-Tangerine Pots de Creme

Now this was a truly exquisite dessert.



Chocolate-Tangerine Pots de Creme
(French for "pots of cream")

I don't know if I've ever eaten anything more rich, more decadent.




The chocolate and tangerine perfectly complemented each other.




What is "pots de creme?" you might ask. As the name implies, it is quite literally a pot of creme. Smooth, creamy cream and egg yolks heated with sugar and vanilla then chilled to create this velvety smooth dish almost similar to a cheesecake but a tad more pudding-y and not as tangy.




This version is made especially fantastic by having both a chocolate and a tangerine layer. 

Anybody else out there crazy about the dark chocolate and orange flavor sensation? Well, in my expert chocolate opinion, tangerines are even better suited for chocolate--more tangy. Truly divine.




Mmmm, look at that texture!





The recipe said to make these in ramekins, but I used these slightly smaller white bowls (I think they are just 4.5 ounces). Personally, I thought this was a better serving size. The quality of this dessert could become a bit overwhelming to the taste buds with too many bites. Or maybe not. I served these with guests, so there wasn't any leftovers for me to test that theory.... Probably a good thing seeings how I swooned over them and they pretty much have a million calories in them.

Loved this dessert though. I'll definitely be making these again--for guests when I'm not in danger of consuming the whole lot myself. :) SO GOOD!


Chocolate-Tangerine Pots de Creme

from Williams Sonoma New Flavors for Desserts 
(pretty marvelous cookbook in my opinion)

Ingredients

2 tangerines
6 oz. bittersweet chocolate, chopped
6 egg yolks
1/3 c. sugar
1 tsp. vanilla
¼ tsp. salt
2 ½ c. heavy cream


Directions

  1. Finely grate the zest from the tangerines then squeeze 3 tablespoons tangerine juice.
  2. Place the chocolate in a heatproof bowl.
  3. In a saucepan, whisk together the egg yolks, sugar, vanilla, salt, and tangerine zest. Whisk the cream into the egg mixture then cook over medium heat, whisking constantly, until the mixture is think enough to coat the back of a wooden spoon. Do not let the mixture boil.
  4. Strain the mixture through a fine-mesh sieve into a large bowl.
  5. Pour two-thirds of the hot mixture over the chocolate, let sit for 5 minutes, then whisk to combine. Whisk the tangerine juice into the remaining plain mixture.
  6. Using a small ladle, fill six ramekins one-third full with the chocolate mixture. Pour the tangerine mixture into the ramekins, dividing it evenly then top with the remaining chocolate mixture. Drag a toothpick or a knife through the mixture in the ramekins, swirling back-and-forth or in a figure-eight pattern to create a marbled effect.
  7. Cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 2 hours or up to 3 days before serving. Serve chilled.

DIY basic hairbows

Is it just us, or is it difficult to find hairbows that match your girls' clothes?

Well, we took matters into our own hands and made some very cute, very sweet and simple hairbows for our girls.



Good ol' Martha has basic how-to-tie-a-nice-bow instructions (see below), and we decided we just wanted cute bows that won't come undone. So, we bought the appropriate colors of ribbons, tied up a bunch of bows, put a couple of stitches in the back so they won't come untied, then glued them to hair clips.



Easy, fun, cute. Perfect little project while watching a nice chick flick (we enjoyed Pride and Prejudice). :)



Martha's Favorite Bow How-To

1. Shape two evenly sized loops, one in each side of the ribbon.
2. Cross right loop over left one.
3. Knot loops by threading right loop behind left one, under, and up through the hole; make sure ribbon is not twisted or bunched.
4. Pull loops into a smooth knot. Adjust loops; trim tails to be slightly longer than loops.
