Pizza oven, step 3: oven construction

After the foundation was laid, and the base supports constructed, actual work on the oven could commence!

My husband ordered this kit from Amazon. It is a Cuore Pizza Oven, and they have a super-great website all about pizza ovens.

Construction went smoothly. The oven form was pieced together and the ceramic insulating blanket laid. I took some shots of my husband inserting the chimney piece (not part of the kit but necessary).

Also, the cement counter tops are all made--we made them in 4' x 4' sections. My husband built two forms out of melamine and poured the counter top cement into them. As they dry we are lifting them into place!

This oven is getting close.

Pizza Oven, Step 2, base supports placed

Work continues on the pizza oven. After laying the foundation, the base for the actual oven and counters were made out of cinder blocks.

Our little guy thinks the highlight of life at the moment is "working on the pizza oven with Dad." He regularly talks about how they are "construction workers." I love it and that the kids can be kids.

Ooblek

Ready for a mess?
A FUN mess?

My kids love to make what they affectionately call "Ooblek."
Ever read Dr. Seuess's Barthalomew and the Ooblek? Well, that's where the name comes from.

So easy too--way easier than slime.

You just mix cornstarch and water--add a little food dye if you are feeling fancy. :)

1 part water
2 parts cornstarch
food dye

Easy peasy.

And yes, it is messy, but it also cleans up pretty easily.
If you want to get all science-y with it, you can talk about how it is an amorphous solid. Or let them vary the ratios of water to cornstarch.

Have a fun afternoon with your ooblek. :)

Plum Harvest

Our plum tree is LOADED this year.
Plums are great because they are so easy to grow and so disease-resistant.

They are also beautiful on the tree--little gems hidden in the leaves.

I thought my daughter looked so sweet sitting under the branches, picking plums. The branches were so loaded that they made a great little canopy under the tree--perfect for a sweet child to nest under. ;)

I hope you find something beautiful in its simplicity today.

Lovin' me some September garden time!

Nothing like a walk through the garden this time of year.

One of my most favorite things to plant is amaranth. It's so dramatic and beautiful.
I have loads of it this year going all around the edge of the garden. I couldn't help but take lots of pictures. :)

Welcome Baby Isla!

We recently welcomed this pretty little girl into our homes and hearts. As the youngest of 5 children, she is not short on love! I love these simple little shots I captured--little baby yawns and stretches, eye contact with big sister. Precious moments that I hope to remember...she has already changed from these images though. That newborn phase is so fleeting.

Foundation laid for the Pizza Oven

Our latest project has been to start building an outdoor, wood-fired pizza oven.
We love ourselves some brick-oven pizza. And parties. We thought, 'why not combine them both!?'

Over the course of several days, we removed all the lilacs (sad day) and poured a foundation for the oven and 8-foot countertops on either side.

While the cement was wet, we all took a turn making hand prints. :)

Fresh raspberry cake

My daughter recently had her 12th birthday and wanted a "pretty" cake this year. She is one to be romantic about the simple beauty of life, so this is what I came up with for her. We were both pleased with it. :)
